The Guide To Hair Care

Get the lowdown on frequently asked hair questions, including how often you should wash your hair, when to use a hair oil and how to prevent split ends.

How often should I wash my hair?

Annoyingly, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It all comes down to hair type, personal preference and the kind of live you lead. However, most experts advise us to avoid washing our hair everyday if we want to avoid dry hair. Shampoo’s tend to strip the hair of its natural oils and washed hair is usually dried with heat which is another cause of dehydration.

What water temperature is best for washing my hair?

There have been many articles stating that washing your hair with cold water will make your hair shinier…this is a myth. Lukewarm water is the ideal temperature as it opens up the hair follicles, allowing the hair and scalp to release dirt and be fully cleansed. Cold water temperatures can’t break up the dirt and oils as effectively while extremely hot water will weaken the hair while you are scrubbing and cause hair breakage.

Do I really need conditioner?

With the best will in the world and the gentlest shampoo, the process of washing your hair will have a dehydrating effect. Therefore you should invest in a good conditioner that will help to restore, protect and encourage natural healthy looking shine. Conditioner should not be kept on your hair for more than 15 minutes and should only be applied to the tips of the hair.

How long before I rinse?

There is no hard and fast rule, but you can leave your shampoo to do its work for between 30 seconds (at the very least) and 2 minutes. Remember, it is not a process to rush.

When would I use a hair oil?

If you feel as though your hair could do with a little TLC, you can use a hair oil. Hair oils can be used as a deep treatment before washing or to tame your hair (wet or dry) before styling. The amount of oil you use should depend on the length of your hair. If you have short hair 1-2 pumps is enough, while longer hair styles can consider 3-4 pumps. Our Wondertree Intensive Hair Oil can be used daily and as a hair treatment. For daily care knead a small quantity in the hair. For use as a hair treatment, apply it before washing the hair and let it work for at least ten minutes. Apply directly in case of a dry scalp.

How do I prevent split ends?

To get rid of split ends, you need to focus your shampoo on the roots and the conditioner on the ends. When you are brushing your hair, make sure you aren’t too rough- a comb should just slide through your hair. Also, limiting the use of heated hair styling tools can reduce the chance of split ends.

How can I dye my hair at home?

Sometimes, the thought of dying your hair at home can be daunting. If you want to know how to dye your hair at home, it is very simple. First off, get the pre-dye care part right. That means ensuring that your hair is in good condition, while you may also wish to consider getting a hot oil treatment about three days before you get started dying your hair at home. Be sure to follow the instructions on the box. For more information check out our helpful guide!

If my shampoo isn’t foaming is it not working?

Honestly, how much your shampoo foams up actually has nothing to do with the quality of your shampoo. The suds are more of a visual cue that your hair is being washed and it doesn’t help to clean your hair at all. Natural shampoos barely foam up because there are less chemicals included in the ingredients. Natural and organic shampoos may not satisfy you in the foaming department but are still cleansing just as effectively. Plus, they are better for your hair too!

How do I dry my hair?

Your hair is in it’s most fragile state when it’s wet and has been warmed up in the shower. Therefore, the last thing that you want to do is cause further damage and breakage by rubbing your hair with a towel to dry it. Instead, you should be gently patting or scrunching the towel into your hair to absorb some of the water. Also, do not put your hair in a towel turban as this pulls the sensitive hairs around the scalp.
